If you happen to keep up with Kodi news, you may already know that the developer of the popular addon known as Exodus recently called it quits. Fortunately, there are still plenty of “Exodus forks” (addons that are based on Exodus source code) that you can use as a substitute for Exodus. One of the newest Exodus forks is Gurzil, and it comes to us by way of a developer called Smash. Keep reading to find out how to install Gurzil on Kodi.

Before we Proceed
We highly recommend using a VPN when using Kodi. Kodi users have been known to receive copyright infringement notices for streaming movies, sports, and TV shows through various App. If you would like to keep your streaming habits private, our recommendation is IPVanish - a complete privacy solution for Kodi users. It's also worth noting that purchasing a 12 month subscription will give you two months free.
How to install Gurzil on Kodi
Here’s how to install Gurzil in 2 easy steps.
Step #1: Install the Smash repository.
Download smashrepo.zip from https://mediarepos.net/kodistuff/. Then, open up your Kodi and click addons on the left side of the screen. Next, click the box icon.
From there, click install from zip file. Finally, navigate to wherever you saved on your computer and open it up.
Step #2: Install Gurzil
After the repo is finished installing, click install from repository → smash repository → video App → gurzil and then click install.
Walking Through Gurzil
If you are already familiar with Exodus, you already know how to use Gurzil. With time, Smash might change Gurzil and make it his own. But right now, Gurzil is almost exactly the same as Exodus. The content and menus are identical. And because Gurzil uses the same list of stream sources as Exodus you’ll be able to pull up just as many links when you search for shows and movies.
From the looks of things, Gurzil is on its way to becoming a major addon. We discovered Gurzil by accident while looking around in the Smash repository. When we mentioned Gurzil in this month’s addon roundup, Gurzil didn’t have any mentions on Twitter. But over the past few days, more people have been talking about it. Here’s a quick beginner’s guide for getting the most out of Gurzil.
How to Find Movies on Gurzil
Because Gurzil can pull in information from the Internet Movie Database and other movie data sources, there are all kinds of ways to lookup movie streams. You can sort movies by genre, year, people, language and popularity. Also, you can filter out violent or sexual movies via the “Certificates” menu. There are even lists for Oscar winning movies and a search function that allows you to type in the name of the movie you want to find. Additionally, “People Search” is an interesting feature that allows you to type in your favorite actor to pull up a list of all the shows that he or she has appeared in.
You can access search and browse Gurzil’s movie lists by clicking movies from the main menu.
Once you find a movie you want to watch, just click it and wait while Gurzil reaches out to its many stream providers. When Gurzil is finished loading up your streams, select a link from the list to start your movie.
How to Find TV shows on Gurzil
Gurzil’s TV shows menu looks similar to the movie menu. It has sections that allow you to sort TV shows by popularity, language or by actor. However, there are a few options in the TV shows section that do not appear in the movies section. For example, you can use the “Airing Today” option to pull up a list of shows that will air new episodes soon. There’s also “TV Calendar,” which allows you to find out which shows are airing new episodes on any given date.
You can find Gurzil’s TV show search bar and various TV related lists via the TV shows option on the main menu.
Watching movies on Gurzil works pretty much the same way as watching movies. Just click the series you want, and Gurzil will pull up its seasons. From there you can drill down to episodes. Click the episode you want, and Gurzil will check its providers for links to streams.
How to Make Gurzil Run Faster
Gurzil can pull in streams from hundreds of different sources. However, sometimes it takes several seconds to generate the stream list. If waiting for your streams to generate annoys you or if you’d rather not wade through long lists of links every time you play a TV show or movie, one easy thing you can do is disable all stream providers except for the ones that you actually use. For example, Primewire works great and is very fast in my location, so that’s the provider I always use.
By default, all of Gurzil’s providers are enabled. However, you don’t need all of them. Once you identify a good provider, you can disable the providers that you don’t want and enjoy superior performance. Go to Gurzil’s main menu and click tools and then providers. Then, turn all the providers off except for the fastest and most reliable ones.
Tip: Unfortunately, there’s no way to disable or enable all the providers at once. You have to click each individual provider that you want to enable or disable. However, clicking the “Defaults” button will automatically re-enable every provider.
Because providers don’t often last long, it’s a good idea to edit your provider list regularly– especially if you can’t find what you want or start running into a lot of dead links.
Stream providers currently available on Gurzil include all of the following video lockers and streaming websites:
How to Change The Artwork in Gurzil
If you don’t like Gurzil’s wolf wallpaper and artwork, you can switch to an alternative design by navigating to tools → general → appearance → genesis.
There’s also a 3rd layout you can use called Extuary, but it doesn’t seem to do anything.
Find out what’s on TV in the UK
Click “Channels” from Gurzil’s main menu to find out which movies are currently playing on various UK cable channels.
Channels that Gurzil can scan include: Sky Premiere, Skype Premiere +1, Sky Showcase, Sky Greats, Sky Disney, Sky Family, Sky Action, Sky Comedy, Sky Crime, Sky Drama, Sky Sci-Fi, Sky Select, Film 4 and Film 4 +1.
The channels interface is rather plain looking because it’s all text. However, hovering over a channel will pull up some information about whatever is playing on the side of the screen. To watch whatever is on, just click the channel and Gurzil will pull up a list of streams.
Gurzil’s Bookmark System Doesn’t Work
Gurzil’s bookmark pages seem to be broken. With Exodus, you could bring up your IMDb and Trakt favorites and access your watch list via My Movies and My TV shows. But when we tried to setup Gurzil for IMDb and Trakt, we ran into error messages caused by Gurzil bugs. Hopefully Smash will get these bugs ironed out soon.
Other App that are Similar to Exodus
Currently, the 3 major Exodus forks out right now are Genesis Reborn, Covenant and Specto. All 3 App are pretty much the same. They all reach out to the same sources to gather links to feeds. Also, their menus have pretty much the same structure. However, Specto is unique because it does not allow you to access your watch list via Trakt or IMDb. Instead, Specto uses an internal bookmark system that allows you to save links to your favorite shows and movies.
The name “Genesis Reborn” recalls the name of an old TV/movie addon that came out before Exodus: Genesis. Genesis is basically identical to Exodus, except for the branding.
Covenant is the direct descendant of Exodus. Many of the developers that contributed to Exodus moved over to Covenant after the last Exodus update came out.
Unlike Covenant and Genesis Reborn, Specto was out long before Exodus was abandoned. It was created by developers that worked on Exodus and then decided to splinter off and create their own brand. Unlike most Exodus forks, Specto does not link to IMDb and Trakt. instead, it has a built-in bookmark system.

- Hundreds of stream providers
- Fast performance
- Easy to use
- Simple menu system
- Similar to Exodus
- Choose from 2 different interface designs
- The IMDb and Trakt bookmark feature is broken
- No internal bookmark system
Gurzil is a new addon, but it’s underlying code has been around for quite a while. Gurzil is actually a fork of Exodus– one of the most popular 3rd party App of the past few years. But now that Exodus’s lead developer COLDFIRE has moved on to other projects, Gurzil’s coder Smash seems poised to pick up where he left off.
Gurzil can do pretty much everything Exodus could do. It can connect to hundreds of different stream sources. Plus it’s fast, and its simple text based interface is logical and easy to use. If all you want to do is find streams for popular TV shows and movies, Gurzil will take you a long way. And if you aren’t a wolf person, you can switch the design scheme to something a little more generic.
The only thing that’s wrong with Gurzil is the fact that the bookmark system appears to be broken. We attempted logging into IMDb and Trakt via Gurzil, but we couldn’t pull up our watch lists. Hopefully Gurzil’s developer Smash will find a way to fix the broken Trakt/IMDb integration feature, or at least add some type of internal bookmark system in the near future.
What’s your favorite Exodus fork?
The story of how Exodus quickly transformed into 3 different App shortly after it was abandoned demonstrates that even though individual App die, the code that makes them work lives on.
Covenant, Exodus and Gurzil are pretty much the same and share many of the same features and stream providers. But judging from a quick glance at Twitter, the most popular Exodus fork right now seems to be Covenant. Covenant was started shortly after the final Exodus update came out and former fans of Exodus appear to be quite happy with it.
On the other hand, the other newcomer Genesis Reborn is also doing well. One reason for its popularity could be that Kodi veterans recognize the name.
Specto is the oldest addon of the 3 major Exodus forks, but not as many people seem to know about it. However, Specto might actually be the most stable addon of the bunch. When TVAddons got sued and went offline, several Kodi developers announced that they were calling it quits, but the makers of Specto calmly continued pushing out updates.
