Re:Mix Momentum Review (Forefront Records) Street Date: June 24 2003 At just over a year and a half after his debut album (Momentum) released, tobyMac is back. Well, sort of. Re:Mix Momentum is an interesting album because while it is like other remix albums out there (with some tracks having a dance/techno sound due to things like louder bass), it also is not like them because of the producers throwing new things in such as actually going back into the studio to record some new material. For example, the “Love Is In The House [NW Remix]” doesn’t have the louder bass like other remix albums, and includes Toby doing a lot of new vocal work making it feel like it’s almost an entirely new song. Another track that is a really cool remix, giving it the feel of a brand new song, is the opening track: “J Train [Math Remix].” The two singers from Earthsuit come in and do quite a bit of vocal work, with the higher-voiced singer re-doing the chorus and the rapper inserting things such as a brand new verse. It just gives the song a cool Earthsuit feel which, being a huge Earthsuit fan, is really awesome and makes it one of my favorite mixes on the album. And for those of you who enjoyed the interlude “Tru Dog” on the original album, tobyMac’s son Truett is back mixing up his old song. It starts with a phone call to Jeff (in the studio) on the end of the track before the mix, then it moves over to the next track (the actual song) where Truett puts down some new vocals overtop of the original. It’s just another amusing track like the last one, especially because of the amusing phone call that takes place before it. There’s a lot more I could talk about, as the album is full of surprises (like all of the new vocal work everywhere). However if I did that would just make this too long and ruin all of the surprises for you when you pick up the album. Being just under the ten dollar price tag (in US funds), Re:Mix Momentum is definitely a must have for any tobyMac fan and a great way to tie us over until the new album releases. Normally I’m not a fan of remix albums but because it’s not just them mixing things up, and they actually put in lots of new aspects, it did me in. Consider checking it out, you will enjoy it.
